WP Vault opens the WhatsApp backups from your old Android phone on your iPhone or iPad, so you can read the chats you left behind. Here is where to look when something doesn’t work. If you can’t find your answer, write to us.
Getting started
Open the app and tap Explore a sample archive to see what you get before touching your own backup. The sample is fictional and doesn’t start your free trial. The in-app guide (the ? button, or Bring a backup from Android) walks you through the six steps below.
Moving a backup from Android, in six steps
- Keep the 64-digit key. On the Android phone, open WhatsApp → ⋮ menu → Settings → Chats → Chat backup → End-to-end encrypted backup and tap Turn on. If WhatsApp offers a passkey, open More options and choose the 64-digit encryption key. Save all 64 characters somewhere private, such as a password manager.
- Create a fresh backup. Back in Chat backup, check that encrypted backup is on, tap Back up and let it finish. WP Vault reads the file on the phone; you don’t need to download anything from your Google account.
- Connect to a computer. Use a USB cable that carries data, keep the phone unlocked, tap the USB notification and choose File transfer. On Windows, open File Explorer → This PC → your phone → Internal shared storage.
- Copy this exact file. Open
Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databasesand copymsgstore.db.crypt15to a folder on the computer. Wait for the copy to finish. - Put the copy in Files. Upload it to iCloud Drive (iCloud.com → Drive), use AirDrop from a Mac, or copy it to a USB drive your iPhone or iPad can read. Open Files and, if you see a cloud-download icon, download the file first.
- Open it in WP Vault. Tap Import a backup → Choose backup file, select
msgstore.db.crypt15, paste the 64-digit key and tap Import into WP Vault. Your original file is not changed.
Common questions
Which backups can WP Vault open?
Encrypted msgstore.db.crypt15 backups from WhatsApp for Android, and decrypted SQLite databases. It does not open .crypt12 or .crypt14 files, WhatsApp’s “Export chat” text files, iPhone backups, or backups that only exist in the cloud. Renaming a file’s extension does not convert it.
What exactly is the “64-digit key”?
It is 64 hexadecimal characters (the numbers 0–9 and the letters A–F) that WhatsApp shows when you turn on encrypted backup with a key. WP Vault accepts spaces and dashes between groups. A password, a passkey or a 6-digit code won’t work, and a new key does not unlock older backups. WP Vault can’t recover a lost key.
I can’t find the backup file on my phone
The usual folder is Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/Databases. Older installations use WhatsApp/Databases in internal storage, and WhatsApp Business uses Android/media/com.whatsapp.w4b/WhatsApp Business/Databases. Choose msgstore.db.crypt15, not dated copies or files named msgstore-increment-…, and not wa.db.crypt15, which is a separate contacts backup. If USB browsing hides the folder, copy the backup to Download with the phone’s Files app first and move that duplicate over USB.
My computer shows an empty phone, or only charges it
Unlock the phone, accept any file-access prompt and reselect File transfer. Try another USB port or a cable known to carry data. Finder on a Mac can’t browse Android storage by itself, so use an Android file-transfer app you trust or a Windows computer for the copy.
The key or the import is rejected
Check that you entered all 64 characters and that the key belongs to this backup, especially if you changed encryption settings. Copy the file again after the Android backup has finished, and make sure your iPhone has free space for both the imported file and its expanded database. Nothing is imported when the key doesn’t match. Keep the Android phone and the original files until you’ve checked the imported archive.
How do I see photos, videos and voice messages?
They are not inside the message database. Copy the WhatsApp/Media folder from the phone as well (keep its subfolders and filenames), put it somewhere in Files and, in WP Vault, open Vault → Import media folder and choose Media. Everything nested inside is indexed. Photos open in the conversation, videos and voice messages play in place, and missing originals stay labelled. If you transferred the folder as a ZIP, extract it in Files first.
How do I get contact names instead of numbers?
Chats open without names, which is why some show numbers. If you have a decrypted wa.db contacts database from the same phone, add it with Vault → Import contacts database. That file normally lives in Android’s private storage, so it is optional and often unavailable over USB.
Is my chat content sent anywhere?
No. Your chats, contacts, media and key stay on your iPhone and are never uploaded. WP Vault opens backups read-only and cannot send, restore or change anything in WhatsApp. It does collect anonymous usage statistics (which features are used, never your content); you can turn them off at any time in the app under Vault → Privacy → Share anonymous usage data, and in the EU, UK and Switzerland the app asks first. See the privacy policy.

Free trial, unlock and refunds
You get seven days of the full app. The trial starts the first time you successfully import one of your own backups, so opening the sample or a failed import doesn’t use any of it, and it never restarts. After it ends, a single one-time purchase (Full Archive Access) unlocks every chat, the full history, archive-wide search and the table browser. If you already bought it, open the paywall and tap Restore Purchases. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
